An Compassion of Strangers: How a Person I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Role That Altered My Path

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Since my companion was exploring starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and began chatting with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I shared that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – close to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I ought to seek a job with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately told my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she responded: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the bravery or nerve to reach out at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that job in New York resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
