Colombia's Leader Says 'I Would Return to Arms Once More' should US Launches an Attack.

President Trump and his Colombian counterpart have escalated the tone of their exchange, increasing strains in their relations following American military units attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He runs drug factories and cocaine factories and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.

Rising Tensions coupled with Allegations

Talking to journalists on Sunday, Trump hinted at analogous armed intervention against Colombia, asserting Colombia faces serious problems and led by a sick man who likes making narcotics and trafficking it to America."

While Colombia remains the world’s largest producer of cocaine, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally tied to the illicit industry.

A Deteriorating Alliance

Colombia for decades served as a staunch collaborator of Washington in the campaign combating drug cartels and received cross-party backing in the US capital, however, the relationship have deteriorated dramatically after Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is mainly overseen by guerrilla factions including the Clan del Golfo, the ELN guerrilla group and breakaway groups of the former Farc guerrillas, the majority of whose members laid down arms subsequent to a 2016 peace deal.

Colombia's Strong Rebuttal

Upon being questioned if military intervention similar to Venezuela was a possibility against his country, Trump said: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who left armed struggle in the 1990s, rejected Trump's claims. "I am no an illegitimate leader nor am I a drug trafficker," he affirmed.

"Trump speaks uninformed. Stop slandering me," he wrote in a post.

"If they [the US] bomb peasants, they will become numerous insurgents across the countryside. And should they arrest the nation's leader, whom a large part of Colombians loves and respects, they will unleash the powerful force of the people," he admonished.

From Insurgent to Statesman

Petro spent a period in his early life belonging of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed that he never participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he participated in creating the nation's constitution in 1991 and later became an influential politician. He was mayor of the Colombian capital before being elected the nation's highest office.

"I swore not to touch arms again ... but for the homeland I would take up arms again," he vowed.

Heightened Measures along with Broad Rejection

The Colombian defence minister stated that the president’s personal security was strengthened.

A segment of Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump's stance, but voices spanning Colombian politics have denounced the notion of American military action against their nation.

Bilateral and Economic Pressure

The US withdrew his travel authorization subsequent to he urged US troops to disobey any illegal orders. In October, authorities imposed financial sanctions against the president, the first lady and a number of key allies.

At the same time as the US increased its military presence near Venezuela and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed attacks on maritime targets off the Pacific coast off the Colombian coast.
