Powerful gusts attaining velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have left nearly 90,000 homes experiencing outages and forced officials to halt over 100 aircraft departures, according to domestic outlets.

The gales are influencing the entire southern region and southern sections of the North Island, per the country's meteorological service.

Officials in New Zealand have issued uncommon red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in core zones encompassing Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been encouraged to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and prepare for further power and communication outages.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Response

The electricity loss is primarily influencing residences predominantly in the South Island, although officials state that the electricity supply was being gradually reinstated.

Local media have stated that in some places roofs have been ripped off houses, and power lines and trees have been knocked down by the winds.

Across Wellington, a man was killed after being struck by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Additionally in the city, a woman was blown onto moving cars on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a event that was recorded in a popular vehicle recording.

Flights to and from the metropolis have been suspended due to the gusts, and some roads and libraries are not operating.

Simultaneously authorities in Canterbury have declared a crisis declaration, to facilitate emergency management operations.
