No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
