One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will release two seasons every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year break that began in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
