Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
